WhatsApp now charges per message — what changes for you
WhatsApp moved from charging per 24-hour conversation to charging per template message, and replies to customers who message you first are free — so the cost now follows what you send, and answering enquiries fast costs nothing.
As of the start of this month, WhatsApp has changed how it charges businesses. The old model billed you per 24-hour conversation; the new one bills per message template you send. If you use WhatsApp to reach customers, it’s worth understanding what that actually means — because the headline (“per-message pricing”) sounds scarier than the reality.
The part most people miss
The change that matters most isn’t the new charge — it’s what’s now free.
Replies to a customer who messaged you first don’t cost anything. When someone sends you an enquiry and you respond within the service window, that conversation is free. You’re billed for the template messages you initiate — things like a marketing broadcast or a proactive notification.
So the cost has shifted onto outbound, and answering inbound is effectively free.
What that means in practice
A few things follow from this:
- Answering enquiries fast is now a free action, not a metered one. Every customer who messages you first can get a full, helpful reply at no per-message cost — so there’s no reason to leave one waiting.
- Outbound is where to be deliberate. Reminders, follow-ups and re-engagement still earn their keep, but they’re now a line item — worth sending with intent, not in bulk.
- The categories matter. Utility messages (a booking confirmation, a reminder) are priced differently from marketing ones, so how you classify a message affects what it costs.
How we’re handling it
On WhatsApp through ZINQ, the agent already leads with answering inbound enquiries — the free, high-value half — and sends outbound workflows (reminders, no-show recovery) as deliberate, well-timed messages rather than blasts. The pricing change rewards exactly that shape: respond to everyone, reach out on purpose. Nothing you need to reconfigure.
